Giant John: meeting held on 7 February 2009

Dearl All,

This is an update on our last meeting, which was held on 7th February 2009. Here we were again, getting together for another English speaking meeting at the SPDC. If you enjoy speaking English and would like to enjoy some fruitful English conversation, please, do come and visit us! We meet every Saturday from 15:30 to 18:30 (except on bank holidays). Our address is:

SPDC – Standard Phonic Drill Centre
Rua Alcindo Guanabara, 17 Gr 507-9
Rio de Janeiro, RJ

On this day, we had Paulo as our coach who brought a very interesting text about Giant John. The story was about a giant man who went to great lengths in order to marry his loved one.

He tried so hard that he almost lost her. Unfortunately, for him and his loved one, they did not live long to enjoy their honeymoon.

After delivering his coaching Coffee Break was announced and we enjoyed our break talking (maybe some gossiped and all):

After Coffee-Break, Cristina was invited to read the previous meeting minutes. She sat in for the recording Secretary on 31st January 2009.

Next, we had a reading of quatrains by Boni, Suzana and Lina Reis. A “quatrain” for those who don’t know is a unit of four lines verse. The SPDC always runs a quatrain contest:

During the second part, we had Daisy and David delivery two very different but yet connected subjects. Daisy, who was the first speaker, talked about Carnival. She talked about the origins of some of the “Blocos de Rua” including her favourite “Cordão do Bola Preta.”

Right after Daisy, David was called on stage. He talked about music and introduced various classic instruments such as the violin, the viola, cello, harp, etc. Valéria helped him out with a projection of people playing the instruments.
